Baking can get quite expensive at times- like when you are trying to find the perfect little heart sprinkles or edible gold pearls. I usually feel pressured to buy cake decorating supplies, but one item I don’t buy is edible glitter.
Because I can make it at home!!
And most important of all, so can YOU.
This diy edible glitter recipe is so simple and extremely inexpensive.
1/2 cup sugar
6-7 drops of your favorite food coloring
1. Pour sugar in a Ziploc bag and add food coloring. Gel food coloring is preferred, but but if you have liquid, it works just as fine.
2. Mix the food coloring and the sugar until it is completely mixed. If you used liquid food coloring, the sugar should be slightly damp.
3. Line a large baking tray with parchment paper and spread the colored sugar evenly. bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 7 minutes. Baking the sugar gives it a shiner effect and makes sure the color darker and prettier.
When it comes out, let it cool and pour it through a sieve. There might be some large crystal chunks that will look perfect on fancy cupcakes.
So there you have it. Simple, easy, and fast. Most of all, inexpensive!
Of course, some decorations are irresistible and totally worth buying.
The green bottle on the left was two dollars and will never be bought again. The stars and the rainbow sprinkles however are a must have for me and I need more stars because mine are almost finishing!
Do you have any cake decorations that you would recommend? And I want to know, what is your favorite topping on a cupcake or a cake. For me its sprinkles and for my cute little sister, the answer is always, “M&Ms!”
